Xampla, a Cambridge University spin-out based on the ground breaking research of Professor Tuomas Knowles, is developing a plant protein-based replacement for environmentally damaging microplastic. Its initial focus is the $12bn microencapsulation market (the synthetic polymer capsules many manufacturers of home and personal care products rely on) which the EU is considering banning.
In 2020, Avonmore invested into Xampla’s £2m pre-seed round alongside Amadeus Capital Partners and Sky Ocean Ventures. In 2021, Horizons Ventures, the private investment arm of Mr Li Ka-shing led a £6.2m seed round into which Avonmore also participated.
Xampla was the first UK university spin-out to secure B Corp accreditation.
